Antique early 19th century French triple tea caddy. Large rectangular form to this wood box with ebonized finish, trimmed with a carved gadroon border characteristic of the Charles X to Louis-Philippe era (1830s to 1840s). Inlaid with brass stringing and elaborate engraved cartouches.
The lid with boulle style inlay with intricate foliage motifs. The two front doors open to reveal red fabric lined interior with individualized compartments. Housing three porcelaine de paris tea canisters. The trio comprises of two stoppered tea canisters and a lidded container perhaps for housing sugar or ideal for creating a mélange with tea leaves from the two bottles. Each of rectangular form with canted corners.
Richly decorated, they feature a vibrant blue ground enhanced with gold gilt painted florals and accents. The lids with hand painted portraits of figures in colorful country dress. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Condition: One stopper with a repaired crack on the corner. The jar has two repaired chips on the edge as shown. The box having some age-related cracks to the exterior. The lid with some scuffing/flaws to the ebonized finish, cracking within the boulle/enamel inlays. Dimensions: Tea box is 9 5/8" length x 4 3/4" width x 5 3/4 tall. The stoppered tea canisters are 4 1/2" tall x 3 1/8" length x 2 1/2" width, the center tea canister is 4 1/2" x 3 1/8" x 2 3/8".
