German Furstenberg Porcelain Tea Caddy Slope Shouldered Underglaze Script F 2

  
EARLY FURSTENBERG PORCELAIN TEA CADDY. This listing features a lovely old German tea caddy by Fürstenberg from my grandmother's porcelain collection.

This piece dates from the mid to late 1800s, possibly earlier, based on the mark on its base. The Fürstenberg factory introduced an underglaze blue script "F" monogram from its start in 1753 and did not modify it until a crown was added occasionally from 1980 until 1918 when it became the official company hallmark. Research indicates that in the 1700s, tea was not as popular in Europe as it was in England so tea canisters were much less common in European than in English porcelain. The majority of early porcelain caddies, made anywhere before 1800, had lost their original lids, were broken, or were married to different lids.

That makes this piece possibly one of the few early German tea caddies still complete with its original lid and cork stopper. It was not made for export.

I haven't found another one decorated with ribbons and flowers like this one, but this shouldn't surprise me since it belonged to my grandmother. As I unpack and distribute her things, I'm learning she had a real gift for finding unusual, rare and the best examples for her collections.

She simply hit it out of the park with this tea caddy. It measures 5 1/4 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches deep. The lid has an applied rose on top and the cork stopper is tight fitting and in great condition. The early Fürstenberg mark of a hand lettered blue script "F" with a number "2" is in the underglaze on the base. This mark predates the much more commonly found crown over the F Fürstenberg mark. There is also a blue script "2"with a second inscribed "2". These numbers likely regard its size.

The overall condition is very good to excellent with only 3 tiny nicks in the porcelain on one corner and two on another one. These are not at all distracting. The applied rose and leaves on the lid are a little rough to the touch with bits of color loss but it's miraculous the flower is even still there, considering the age of this piece. The floral and ribbon decorations are meticulous, all painted by the talented hands of German porcelain artists who were revered for their incomparable work.
